Dossier: Gettypede 7 – 2015

WHAT: The 7th GuerilLA Gettypede
WHEN: Saturday, July 25th, 2015 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm
WHERE: The Getty Center Museum
BRING: Comfortable shoes for a leisurely walk. A light-emitting device like a small flashlight or smartphone with a flashlight function.

Agents,

The time has come once again for GuerilLA agents to infiltrate the Getty for a fun . . . er, “tour” of the museum.

THE MISSION: To gradually form a long line of agents playing follow-the-leader, creating the “Gettypede” – a living, moving, work of art winding through the complex architecture of the Getty.  Simple.  Scenic.  Lots of fun.

The mission will start at 6:00 pm.

Note that you must take a tram to enter the Getty so give yourself at least one hour to park and make your way to your objective.  If you get there early, see some art exhibits, have a picnic … act natural.  By 6:00pm, be at your starting point, designated by birthday:

Jul-Sep: Central Courtyard
Jan-Mar: The Gardens
Oct-Dec: Main Entrance or Cafe
Apr-Jun: Anywhere but the inside of the galleries

Here is a map of the grounds:  http://getty.edu/visit/downloads/center_overview_map.pdf

Agent Silky will exit the tram some time after 6pm and will tweet right before his arrival at the top of the hill.  Casually begin to form a line behind him.  When the line reaches the other parts of museum, casually join it as it makes its way towards you.  Emphasis on casual, as if there is nothing unusual about the line.  Do not draw attention to yourself as you join the Gettypede.  Once in line, you are playing “follow the leader”:  follow the person in front of you at arm’s length, copying anything they do, and the action will move down the line.  Have your flashlight, phone, or other light-emitting device ready because at a certain point, it will become a part of the follow-the-leader element.

A concert will begin at 6pm in the central courtyard.  We will pass through the courtyard to pick up agents to join the line, but we will do our best to respect the musicians and try not to pull focus from them.  And thus, the Mission will end in a different part of the Getty from previous years.

Help hold open doors if needed.  The Mission will take place primarily in the outdoor areas.  We will not enter any galleries.

If someone asks you what’s going on, don’t let on: maybe you’re just seeing art, maybe you just joined because you thought it was a tour . . .

Don’t worry about taking pictures.  We’ll have designated agents documenting (mostly to keep the flow going).  If this pisses you off because you never leave the house without a camera, LET US KNOW.  You can be an “official” documenter.

When the Gettypede ends, DISPERSE!  Go see more art.  Watch the evening concert.  Go to the shuttle.  DO NOT stay and talk about the mission.

Debriefing will be in Westwood Village at Sepi’s (http://www.sepiswestwood.com) about half an hour after the Mission.  Come talk about the Mission *here* over yummy food and drinks.  Sepi’s address: 10968 Le Conte Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90024. $3 parking after 6pm available a block and a half away around the corner on Broxton Ave.: http://www.yelp.com/biz/broxton-avenue-public-parking-los-angeles.  Some free street parking will be available after 8pm, but some meters are enforced until midnight. Read the parking signs carefully.

NOTES:

Admission to the Getty Center and to all exhibitions is FREE—no tickets or reservations are required for general admission. However, Parking is $10 per car ($15 before 5pm). Carpooling and splitting the cost of parking is highly recommended.

Public transportation: the 234 Metro bus drops you off right at the entrance of the Getty.  Check out http://www.metro.net for more info.
